    Job Description

    This position is in the Lifting & Handling (Rigging) Dept. at Quonset Point. The Rigging Department schedules, coordinates & accomplishes virtually all lifting & handling activities in support of manufacturing, assembly, outfitting & testing of submarine structures and components while maintaining safety, quality, cost and schedule requirements. The dept operates all facility cranes (bridge, gantry, mobile, crawler, cantilever) and transporters. This position requires a highly motivated self-starter, ready to work in a fast-paced production environment. The selected candidate will report to the Manager of Lifting & Handling and provide assistance to lifting & handling management to drive improvements in the overall quality of lifting and handling.


    Primary Responsibilities include the following:

    • Active participation as a key member of the Corporate Lifting & Handling Accident Prevention Team and perform lifting and handling surveillance's
    • Interact with lifting & handling personnel to ensure compliance with EB policies and procedures
    • Perform trend analysis of surveillance, near miss and accident data, collaborate with the Groton Accident Prevention Team Lead and provide reports to management including recommended corrective actions to curb negative trends
    • Maintain the near miss and critique report logs
    • Assist management with unusual occurrence investigations, near miss, accident and critique reports including causal analysis and corrective actions
    • Assist management with CAR and internal/external audit response
    • Lead audit preparations and compile the Navy Crane Center pre-audit package
    • Frequently interact with EB Audit & Assessment and local Naval Crane Center representative
    • Assist management with Corrective Action Board presentations
    • Generate lifting and handling All Team Notices
    • Assist management with improving training content and curriculum

    Additional Responsibilities include:

    • Provide technical guidance to lifting and handling management, manufacturing reps, and personnel while serving as a liaison to Quonset Point manufacturing engineering
    • Review fixture designs, lifting and handling drawings, MEPs, construction methods, capabilities and build sequence to supportColumbia and VPM programs
    • Perform technical review of completed test forms prior to dept. sign off
    • Assist Quonset Point manufacturing engineering with technical problem resolution/disposition
    • Develop and revise lifting and handling policies and procedures as required
    • Develop and implement process improvement initiatives

    Education/ Experience


    • A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering is required; A BS in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with a Structural concentration is highly desired
    • Candidates must possess strong computer skills; Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Access & Power Point is required
    • Candidates must be willing to work extended hours when needed to support facility goals & deadlines
    • Candidates must be willing to work in a shipyard environment where climbing ladders and scaffolding at elevated heights is required; working in congested and tight confined areas is required; working in hot and cold climates indoor/outdoor may be required
    • Candidates must have strong writing, presentation and communication skills
    • Motivated, possess good interpersonal skills and work in a collaborative team environment
    • Must be able to work independently with minimal oversight
    • Strong leadership skills are required
    • Occasional business travel may be required

    Preferred / Desired Skills:

    • A minimum of 2 years of experience in Engineering is desired
    • Prior construction (deck plate) support experience is desired
    • Prior experience in lifting & handling / rigging operations is highly desirable
    • Experience with audits, surveillance, trend analysis, critique reports/causal analysis, quality control, mentoring or instructing is desirable
    • Structural or mechanical background preferred
    • Belt or Lean Six Sigma experience preferred
    • Exposure to local customers (NCC, NAVSEA, SUPSHIP, NRRO) preferred


    Applicant must be granted a minimum of an interim secret clearance prior to position commencing. They must be able to obtain and maintain a final secret clearance to remain in that position.
