    Job Description

    To carry out the functions and responsibilities of the metallic Materials Engineering Section of Department 341. The job involves planning, coordination and liaison with other EB departments, HII-Newport News, vendors, and the customer, and execution of the following specific functions and responsibilities:

    • Provide materials engineering input into Design and Engineering projects, from initial concepts to final design, including material selections, materials evaluations, and technical liaison with other departments and the customer.
    • Provide technical direction to Purchasing, Quality Assurance and other departments in the procurement of materials and components.
    • Perform material failure analyses and related engineering investigations.
    • Provide technical assistance and direction to Operations in the manufacturing processing of materials.
    • Prepare and/or review and revise material procurement specifications and shipyard procedures for materials processing.
    • Maintain liaison with Government and private laboratories, and industry relative to materials technology.
    • Provide technical direction and oversight to metallurgy laboratory personnel.        

    Education/ Experience


    • BS in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Engineering with a concentration in metals.
    • A minimum of 5 years work experience in metallurgical engineering or materials engineering.
    • Applicants should be familiar with mill production of metal products, casting production, heat treatment, mechanical properties of materials, mechanical property testing and metallographic techniques.
    • Material selection experience involving consideration of corrosion and corrosion control methods, materials compatibility to reduce corrosion-related problems, as well as abilities to assess other factors such as weldability, impact/fracture toughness, galling and fatigue.
    • Experience working with and interpreting material specifications including Military, Federal and ASTM, AWS and SAE AMS.


    • MS Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Engineering with a concentration in metals.
    • Experience with failure analyses, production of wrought and cast metal products, heat treatment, mechanical testing and metallographic techniques.
    • Metallurgical laboratory and testing facility experience is beneficial, and the applicant should be familiar with writing laboratory procedures.


    • The applicants must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, and it is expected that the applicants are able to write technical reports and correspondence using good grammar with correct spelling and punctuation.
    • Applicants must be personable, interested in working as part of a team, willing to consult with coworkers, and comfortable in interacting directly both with hourly technicians and with upper management.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required.
