    Job Description


    Department’s 454, Tactical Software Engineering, engineers apply software and computer engineering skills to specify, design, develop, integrate, and test, as well as subcontract manage software development for US Navy Nuclear Submarines. Leveraging the latest state-of-the-art technologies, and collaborating with systems engineers, submarine software is developed and maintained for a great variety of submarine platforms and control systems such as: Ship Control, Combat Launch Control, Weapons Stowage and Handling, as well as other specialized embedded real-time safety critical shipboard and database systems, simulators, and land based trainers.


    System administrators in Dept 454 manage software development networks used in the production of tactical and simulation software in support of US Navy vessels. Specific responsibilities include:

    • Day to day administration of a multi-site Wide Area Network
    • Long term planning for expansion and obsolescence
    • Providing "helpdesk" support to ~200 users
    • Working with software developers to provide robust development environments while implementing secuirty controls
    • Preparing presentations, participating in NAVSEA design reviews and interfacing closely with hardware, system and software engineering teams

    Education/ Experience

    A Bachelor of Science degree is required. Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity or equivalent technical degree is preferred. A Master’s degree in these areas is highly desirable. 

    At least 3 years of experience is preferred relevant to this job description. In-depth knowledge of:

    • computer network infrastructures
    • operating systems (Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris)
    • virtualization technologies (Linux KVm, VMWare ESXi)
    • shell scripting (csh, bash, perl)

    is required.  Understanding of both DoD (National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual) and NIST 800-53 and/or NIST 800-171 security controls is desired. CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, CISSP certifications are preferred.


    The candidate must possess strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and writing skills, including the ability to write documentation as required. Candidate must be highly motivated, perform independently, as well as interact with other groups and organizations in an engineering environment and be able to work with Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI) Level 3 processes. Familiarity with configuration management and quality assurance is required.
