Job Description

To carry out the functions and responsibilities of the Welding Engineering Section of Department 341. The job involves planning, coordination and liaison with other EB departments, Newport News Shipbuilding, vendors, and the customer, and execution of the following specific functions and responsibilities:

  • Assist in the review and disposition of Vendor Welding Procedure Approval Requests and Vendor Information Requests as related to welding consumables and welding studs.
  • Conduct welding vendor audits along with Supplier Quality as necessary.
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise on welding related issues, repairs, and maintenance to vendors, shipyard construction, and overhaul activities taking place at various Electric Boat locations.
  • Review, administer and ensure shipyard compliance with fabrication, welding, non-destructive testing, and welding consumable specifications, both military and commercial as required.
  • Develop and maintain company standards, procedures, best practices, and process improvements in the areas of welding.
  • Develop and qualify welding procedures for specific applications by selecting appropriate welding processes, determining optimal welding parameter ranges, and utilizing appropriate qualification tests assemblies.
  • Participate in design-build teams to develop designs that are sound from a materials and weldability perspective and are cost-effective in terms of producibility.
  • Prepare technical reports as result of testing, research and development, and investigations.
  • Conduct research and development investigations to develop and test new structural fabrication processes and procedures, improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures.
  • Evaluate new developments in the welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes.
  • Serve as project lead or technical lead on both in-house and externally funded development and process improvement/cost reduction tasks.
  • Interface with Electric Boat Engineering, Operations, Information Technology departments as well as SUPSHIP Groton, NRRO, NR, and NAVSEA as required.

Education/ Experience


  • Bachelor of Science in Welding Engineering, Metallurgy/Metallurgical Engineering or Material Engineering (focus on metals as opposed to non-metallics)
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience


  • Experience in the support of structural or piping applications and the ability to read and understand drawings
  • Experience in an industrial environment, shipbuilding or other heavy fabrication, though not required, would be beneficial.
  • Familiarity or experience with basic arc welding processes
  • In addition, applicants must have the ability to analyze solutions and to develop and implement solutions.
  • Welding Procedure Qualification development and review experience a plus
  • Welder training or experience in the field of welding is beneficial
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access
  • Familiarity with Military and Commercial Specifications with regards to Welding and Brazing Procedure Qualification and Fabrication of pipe and structure, Tech Pub 248, Tech Pub 1688, Tech Pub 278, AWS, and ASME is a plus.


  • The ability to understand basic principles of welding and non-destructive testing.
  • Must be able to read and interpret specifications, procedures, drawings and other documents;
  • Must be a team player, comfortable working and communicating with all levels;
  • Must be able able to speak clearly and possess basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, and it is expected that the selected are able to write technical reports and correspondence using good grammar with correct spelling and punctuation.
