Nuclear Waterfront Engineering, Propulsion Plant Electrical (D427) provides engineering support of electrical components and systems used in the propulsion plant for submarines in construction at the Electric Boat shipyard. This department also performs design engineering activities for submarines in construction.  D427 is looking for a midcareer electrical engineer with power distribution and analysis experience for responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:

• Support power change estimates for new VIRGINIA program tasks.
• Attend kickoff meetings for new tasks that require modifications to the VIRGINIA power distribution system.
• Define work scopes for power system impacts and provide needed changes to electrical designers for implementation on construction drawings.
• Hold interface review meetings to ensure all internal and external groups, whose design and engineering products are impacted, are aware of necessary changes and are officially tasked with actions.
• Maintaining configuration of department calculations, models, and spreadsheets.
• Provide mentoring and senior technical reviews of various power calculations (load analysis, voltage drop, phase balance, breaker coordination, fault /short circuit analysis).
• Support entry level engineers in evaluating downstream load data for various design changes to ensure MIL-STD-1399 Type I power compliance is satisfied.
• Provide technical review of changes to construction drawings.
• Support a department configuration management plan for calculations, spreadsheets, circuit breaker studies, etc.
• Perform audits to verify department compliance with company and department procedures regarding compliance to Ship Specifications, MIL-STD-1399, and sign off of power cables for procurement.
• Maintain power distribution component selection guidance and lessons learned.
• Support transitioning from spreadsheet to analysis tools (e.g., Paladin DesignBase, ETAP, etc.)
• Organize vendor training for power components and power analysis software.
• Support obsolescence management tasks for major power components (switchboards, bus transfer switches, etc.).
• Support test procedures and data analysis for testing evolutions shipboard and at compatibility test facilities.
• Supporting shipboard integration, testing, and troubleshooting

• Required Education:

  • Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical degree required
  • At least Seven years Engineering experience 

• Preferred, but not required experience:

  • Experience planning and executing complex projects and operations.
  • Experience with component engineering and system integration of power equipment such as switchboards, circuit breakers, fuses, motor controllers, inverters, converters, batteries, and generators.
  • Experience authoring technical dispositions in calculations, white papers, recommendation letters, test procedures, test reports, construction/design change packages, component technical manuals, etc.
  • Knowledge of grounded and ungrounded power distribution systems, preferably shipboard.
  • Ability to perform stability and transient analysis with MATLAB, plot and present results, perform data reduction.
  • Ability to model power distribution networks in Excel or Paladin DesignBase to perform load analysis, load analysis, voltage drop, phase balance, breaker coordination, fault /short circuit analysis
  • Experience as a U.S. Navy officer with electrical or electronics background
  • Qualified as a nuclear plant operator (EOOW certified)
  • Experience leading test programs
  • Academic coursework in power systems
  • Experience working in a commercial or Naval shipyard preferred
  • Knowledge of electrical rotating machinery operation, maintenance and repair
